Do not use this app to make a decision you cannot afford to get wrong. It reports what riders and public sources say about the PRT. It is frequently right, it is not authoritative, and it is not operated by the university that runs the system.
What this is
PRT Status is a free, independent app made by a student. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by West Virginia University, and it speaks for nobody but itself. The PRT is operated by the university; prt.wvu.edu is the official source and outranks this app whenever the two disagree.
It costs nothing, carries no advertising, and has no accounts. Using it means agreeing to what follows.
Accuracy, and the honest limits of it
The app combines a transcribed timetable, WVU's public channels, and reports from riders. Every one of those can be wrong, late, or missing:
- A published source can go stale and keep answering confidently — that is the specific failure this app was built to catch, and it can happen to any source including this one.
- Rider reports are unverified. The app weighs them and shows how sure it is, but people make mistakes and a small number of people can be wrong together.
- The service can be down, out of date, or unreachable.
The app is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. No promise is made that it will be available, accurate, or fit for any particular purpose, and no liability is accepted for a journey taken or not taken on the strength of what it said.
Reporting honestly
The whole app rests on riders telling the truth about what they can see. So:
- Report what is actually happening at the station you are actually at.
- Do not file reports to mislead people, as a joke, or to make the PRT look worse or better than it is. Someone reads these and decides whether to walk.
- Do not automate reports, script the API, or use more than one device to make one person look like several.
- Do not attempt to interfere with the service or the people using it.
Rate limits apply, and reports from a device or network that appears to be abusing the system can stop counting without notice. There is no account to close, so this is the only enforcement there is.
The app itself
You may use it for its intended purpose, on your own devices, as much as you like. You may not resell it, redistribute a modified copy as though it were this one, or scrape the API to build a competing service.
Station names, WVU marks, and anything published by the university belong to the university. Everything else here belongs to its author.
Changes and ending
The app may change, and it may stop. It is a student project with no company behind it and no promise of a particular lifespan. If these terms change, the date at the top changes; material changes will be stated rather than buried.
Law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of West Virginia, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If any part of them is unenforceable, the rest still stands.
